No one likes age spots; it’s a sign we’re getting older and that the days of our faces looking as fresh as a baby’s butt are over. Problem is, it’s so freaking expensive to reverse the damage those days of drinking margarita’s on the beach have caused us. If only we could have remembered to reapply sunscreen every second drink. I make sure of it now!
In the meantime, I can’t afford thousands of dollars on lasers and specialized lotions to fix the damage I have done thus far: some cost more than my monthly rent! So I searched high and low for some natural remedies to remove age spots from the face, and for treatments that would keep my account balance in check while doing so.
Everything has a price, but anything is better than the aforementioned pricey treatment options. Many natural ways to erase the past can be found in your fridge or cupboard. (note: gin to erase the memory of that horrid one night stand does not apply here).
Aloe Vera
Yeah, it will help with the sunburn that caused the damage in the first place, but it can also remove age spots. Apply fresh aloe vera (if not fresh, use the gel) to the spot twice a day for a month.
Apple Cider
I’ve taken apple cider for years to aid my body in the breakdown of fat. Not only is it good to ingest in limited quantities but it can be used topically to help removes age spots from the face. Combine two parts apple cider vinegar with one part orange juice to any and all ages spots with a cotton ball. Do this twice a day for a month.
Buttermilk
Buttermilk is good in pancakes. It is also good for the face. A main ingredient in buttermilk is lactic acid, which is an alpha hydroxyacid (AHA). You might recognize this chemical as being the same one used in expensive anti-aging creams you can buy at drugstores. AHA exfoliates the skin; therefore, so does buttermilk! Apply it to the discolorations on your face twice a day, and they should disappear in a month.
Lemon Juice
When I sip margarita’s on the beach I put lemon juice in my hair for natural, sun-kissed highlights. When I want to reverse the damage the sun made, I put it on my face! Lemon juice is a natural rejuvenator that helps fade and lighten your skin. Rub the juice of a lemon on your face twice a day for a month and check out the results. Save the leftover slices for your cosmopolitan.
Onion
It can make you cry, and apparently weep from joy with its skin whitening capabilities. Cut an onion and rub the juice over your age spots every day. The more potent the better so stick with a yellow or white one.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E has long been used to remove the appearance of stretch marks and scarring of the skin; every woman should have a jar of this! Apply it topically to the age spots on your face twice daily for a month.
Castor Oil
Applied topically castor oil is supposed to work wonders. Gently rub the oil into your skin twice daily and the spots should be gone in a month.
Garbanzo Beans
Hopefully this one works as I love hummus! Mash up some of these beans with water to make a paste and apply it to the skin. Leave it on till it dries, then wipe it off with a warm face cloth.
Potatoes
Finally, a use for those not-so-carb-friendly spuds: cut them into slices and rub the juices into the face, leaving it on for 15 minutes. The juice of the potato can help reduce blemishes and skin discolorations.
Not every remedy will work on every person. I haven’t had a chance to try all of these yet, but for those of you who have luck with any one of these options, let us know!
